The State of Health and Care for Older People in England
England’s older population is growing rapidly, but healthy life expectancy is falling, especially in deprived areas. Many older people face multiple long-term conditions, frailty, and mental health challenges, yet access to care remains difficult. NHS and social care services are under pressure, with long waits, staff shortages, and increasing reliance on unpaid carers. Financial strain means more people are paying privately or going without support. The Government’s 10-Year Health Plan promises a shift from hospital to community care, but progress is slow. Urgent action is needed to prioritise older people and integrate health and social care.
