The State of Health and Care for Older People in England

Health Spot launched at Forest Road Youth Hub to make health services easier to access for young people aged 11–25. Designed with input from over 230 young people, it offers a “one-stop-shop” for GP care, mental health support, sexual health, and wellbeing services—all in a safe, youth-friendly space.
In its first year, Health Spot delivered more than 800 appointments and received 256 referrals, nearly half of which were self-referrals. Mental health support was the most common need, followed by sexual health. The service reached some of the most vulnerable groups: 57% had a social care history, 29% had special educational needs, and 40% were eligible for free school meals.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. 92% of young people rated the service as “Good” or “Excellent,” and 95% said they would return. Many described Health Spot as friendly, safe, and easy to access, with youth workers playing a key role in building trust.
The pilot has improved access for vulnerable young people, strengthened youth voice in service design, and fostered strong partnerships across agencies. Challenges remain, including funding sustainability, IT issues affecting GP record access, and the need to engage underrepresented groups such as young men.
Looking ahead, an independent evaluation is underway, and plans are in place to expand the model across North East London, secure long-term funding, and enhance mental health pathways.
