Homerton Hospital breaks silence on path lab
Homerton Hospital has been seeking a collaboration with Whittington Hospital to help run its pathology services for Hackney patients, it has emerged.
The hospital’s chief operating officer Dylan Jones told the Health in Hackney scrutiny commission in October that the north London hospital was their preferred partner.
But NHS Improvement has since cast doubt on the plans with publication of proposals for a ‘consolidated’ network of pathology services in London.
Under the NHS Improvement proposals, Homerton Hospital would be subsidiary ‘spoke’ service to a main service ‘hub’ run by Barts NHS Trust.
Mr Jones told the scrutiny commissioners the hospital could not be compelled into a ‘forced marriage’ with Barts as it still had a duty to choose the best service for Hackney patients.
He added that a collaboration with the Whittington Hospital would be ‘harder now’ following NHS Improvement’s intervention.
