Former volunteer trials pioneering online therapy for suicidal patients
Former Healthwatch Hackney volunteer Ozlem Eylem is trialling a pioneering online therapy to help Turkish-speaking patients who have suicidal thoughts.
The researcher at Queen Mary University of London is testing how well the new e-health intervention ‘Kiymacanina’ prevents suicides among Turkish-speaking people in the UK and Netherlands.
Ozlem said Turkish communities in Europe often experienced high rates of suicide due to cultural taboos and other factors.
‘This e-health intervention has the advantage of ease and anonymity, allowing users to get around issues such as the barrier of cultural taboos concerning mental health issues,’ she said.
Hackney residents were among the people Ozlem interviewed to research and develop the tool. Patients can register to use the therapy for free at www.kiymacanina.org.
